About the County

Located 15 minutes off I-75, one hour south of Chattanooga and one and a half hours north of Atlanta, Murray County is poised to become a more economically and commercially diverse community.  Home to roughly 26,000 people in 1990, the County’s population growth has outpaced the state of Georgia and the national growth rate. Today, more than 40,000 residents call Murray County home.

Manufacturing accounts for nearly half of all jobs in Murray County, and most of these jobs are in carpet or carpet-related industries.  A growing population provides a welcoming atmosphere for new retail ventures, yet the County maintains a rustic, rural charm and is still home to many farms.

Tourism plays an important part in the local economy.  The land that now comprises Murray County was once a part of the Cherokee Nation, and the county is home to the historic Chief Vann House. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, Murray County is also home to beautiful scenery, and with its 34,102 acres of wilderness area, 1,920 acres of state parks, 3,220 acres of lakes, and many popular hiking, biking, and horse trails the County abounds with opportunities for outdoor adventure and sport.
